The Best Astronomy Topics

Worm Holes:

The definition of a wormhole is a theoretical distortion of space-time in a region of the universe that would link one location or time with another, through a path that is shorter in distance or duration than would otherwise be expected. To translate it so that you could understand it, it is a "shortcut" through space and time. A wormhole has atleast 2 mouths that are connected to a single throat. There is no observational proof of a wormhole, but it can be a valid solution inthe theory of General Relativity.

Dark Matter:

Dark matter can be explained as unseen matter that could make up more than ninety percent of the universe. As the name implies, dark matter does not interact with light or other electromagnetic radiation, so it cannot be seen directly, but it can be detected by measuring its effects [gravitational]. It is believed that dark matter was instrumental in forming galaxies early in the Big Bang.

Ultimate Fate of the Universe:

The ultimate fate of the universe is a topic in physical cosmology. Physical cosmology is a branch of astronomy that studies of the large-scale structure of the universe and is concerned with fundamental questions about its formation and evolution. Many possible fates are predicted by rival scientific theories, such as the big rip, the big crunch, big bounce, and etc. These have all been developed my various scientists.

Milky Way Galaxy:

The milky way is the galaxy containing the solar system, visible as a broad band of faint light in the night sky.It is made up of comprising an estimated 200 billion stars, and is estimated to be 13.6 million years old. (about as old as the universe) The entire galaxy is rotating about the Milky Way's center. It has made many changes since it was developed.

Star Constellations:

Any of certain groupings of stars that were imagined by those who named them to form images of objects, mythological figures, or creatures in the sky. They are useful in helping sky gazers and navigators locate certain stars. A constellation's stars are often designated by its name and letters of the Greek alphabet in order of brightness. I think that it is stupid that they try to make pictures out of the stars, but that is just my personal opinion.

wonderful winds =]

1. What 3 factors effect wind?

  • pressure-gradient force
  • coriolis effect
  • friction
2. Which of the 3 do you think has the greatest effect? Why?
  • Friction, changes the wind speed and possibly direction

3. What would happen if this factor (from #2) all of a sudden stopped? Remember to include details about what might happen in your response?
  • The air would never slow down and you would always be able to predict the weather.

How The Greenhouse Effect Affects.

What is the greenhouse effect? The phenomenon where the earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation, caused by the presence in the atmosphere of gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane that allow incoming sunlight to pass through but absorb heat radiated back from the earth's surface.

What are the 3 most common greenhouse gases? carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane

How are the greenhouse gases produced? they are natural, but we are currently making a lot more now through transportation, power plates, etc.

How does the greenhouse effect impact our lives? It causes the earth to be hotter.

Is the greenhouse effect good or bad? Why? As the Earth is now, the greenhouse effect is not a bad thing, and it helps to keep us alive. However, the way in which we are living today, means that a lot more of the gases that trap the sun's energy are being made. In a few years time, this may mean that more hot air will be trapped by this extra gas, which means that the temperature of the Earth will increase.

Oops! I Drilled it Again

What is offshore drilling?

Offshore drilling is act of extracting resources, primarily oil, in an ocean or lake.

Why is it good?

It is a a viable source of domestic production for oil to be obtained.

Why is it bad?

Pollution from everyday operations and oil spills from platforms, pipelines and tankers can occur, and when oil is brought up from beneath the ocean floor, chemicals and toxic substances such as mercury and lead can be discharged back into the ocean. These chemicals and toxic substances can harm sea life.

How do you feel about it?

I feel that there are too many risks off offshore drilling, and if it is going to be done, there should be a 100% chance that the oil will be obtained safely with no spills possible. We have too much to lose from obtaining oil in ways that could result badly.
